Hey Doc, It's Midnight!Mar 31, 2010 DC Universe Classics wave 12 (or you could call it the Darksied series) skewed a little more obscure than some past waves. They also have some updated packaging. This is Doctor Midnight. After being caught in a grenade blast we was gifted with a type of reverse sight (man, you trip over a rock in the DC Universe... super powers!). He can see perfectly in the dark but not in light, although his goggles rectify that deficiency, giving him an advantage when fighting crime at night. And he has an owl named Hooty! I don't personally think this is a strap on a costume and fight crime super power but what do I know.
For Kids:
While the figure is sturdy and fine for play I don't think many youngsters will be that interested (and yes I know it says "adult collector" right on the box, but where do you think adult collectors come from?). He's not a recognizable face and while his outfit is nice and classic it's not "cool" really. And poor Hooty would probably end up in the couch or in a nostril.
For Adults:
All the sculpt work is very nice here. The little moons on his forehead and chest are sculpted on and the work on his goggles and lower face is crisp. He has the kind of shirt that hangs down below the belt and the sculpted wrinkles look good. His cape is about ankle length and hangs down pretty straight. His boots are the type with a large cuff at top.
He's pretty colorful in a classic type scheme - something about it makes me think he belongs in the woods though (and the owl doesn't lessen that impression). He wears a green cape, red shirt with yellow moon buttons, black pants, belt, sleeves and hood and brown gloves and boots. His goggles are silver rimmed with blue lenses. All the small details, the moon buttons, belt buckle and goggles are well painted with very minimal slop.
No surprises in articulation - he's got, cut neck, ball pin shoulders, pin elbows, cut wrists, ab crunch, cut waist, the universal hip joints (although limited due to the long shirt), cut thighs, pin knees and ankles and a cut at the top of the ankles.
All the figures in this wave come with a little collector button, the kind you pin to your shirt, with little comic pictures loosely related to the figure. He also has Hooty the owl who looks nice and is painted well, brown with black wash. Hooty clips to Doc's arm fairly secure and his head even turns. His other accessory is his piece of Darksied.
Toss up. He's not a very exciting character (to me) but I can't deny the quality of the work and he does have an owl. I'm feeling 3 ½ but if you are a fan of this guy then he's easily a four star for you.
The Collect and Connect, Darksied, is a welcome addition to all the Fourth World characters. He stands a fairly impressive 8 ½" tall. His craggy skin looks just a touch soft to me in comparison with an older (but smaller) version of the character I have but he still looks pretty good. There's good detail despite that and even the bottom of his feet contain all that Fourth World circuitry. He's just as articulated as his smaller counterparts and even has a couple of accessories. One, he's got a Mother Box he can hold in his hand and that also will attach to the back of his belt. Two, he has an interchangeable right hand, one in the regular blue glove posed to hold the Mother Box and an open menacing golden gloved hand covered in circuits and machinery. He's not as impressive as I'd like but still a very good figure who deserves 4 stars.
